Day 14 Follow up - Bonz
Day 14 Follow Up.
Turns out you can never judge an RV park by its gravel. The Downtown RV Park in Watson Lake turned out to be a great place to stay for two days. The owner, Archie, is cantankerous on the outside, but has a heart of gold once you crack through the shell. He helped us set up a TV in our camper and strung it up with his cable so we could catch up on some news; something we've heard very little of. Turns out he's a retired deep sea robotics specialist who travels the world during the six months his RV Park is closed for the winter. He developed some of the systems used to explore the Marianas Trench, and Titanic, and do recoveries of debris and remains from accidents, including Space Shuttle Challenger and currently of the submersible at Titanic, of what he calls "that irresponsible piece of junk." He ended up having a Spottted Cow with us in our camper. We talked metallurgy, pressure, politics, and world travel. Everything we wanted to do in Watson Lake was within two blocks, except for the tire shop and Peach's new beau Brent. We've been following the path of Mary Ann and Hub (who we honored at the sign post forest) for the past several days. Mary Ann put together a great bound collection of their travels from their journey and gave it to us for our trip. It has been entertaining and very helpful to us.
We leave their route and the Alaska Highway today. We've been planning on going another day on the ALCAN to Whitehorse before taking the Klondike Highway north the Dawson City and the magnificent but rustic "Top of the World Highway." It's not well suited for bigger campers, and probably not well suited for ours either, but the road awaits us. Due to reported poor road conditions on the Klondike, we're skipping Whitehorse and heading straight north the 580 miles out of Watson Lake on the Cambell Highway, adding about two hundred miles of gravel road. We'll camp on the side of the road along the way, like people do in those parts. We'll be remote, so probably won't have any cell coverage (or texts or blogs) for a few days. That's what the solar panels, the bear spray, the shotgun, and the sat phone is for.

Hi Peach and Dick, Antje forwarded to me the link to your blog. Love it! Enjoy your trip. M.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoy your blog. I laugh at some parts, feel sad at other parts but glad you're there to experience it all! Miss ya though!
ReplyDeleteSafe travels. How much Spotted Cow did you bring with? At what point do you need to switch to Labatts?
