Peach Day 7

July 7, day 7. 

This is Peach, doing my first ever blog, to show I'm still around and that Dick really didn't trade me in for Jess, the bartender on Day 5 (Hard Knox Brewery). So everything's crystal clear, we are, essentially, getting along very well, except for the MANY times Dick and I don't agree on things (ie, he's not listening to me and blabs on about God knows what). ANYWAY, today started off beautiful, 70, sunny and we take off at 11am to ride our bikes to Lake Louise. Dick has scoped out the trail, about 3 miles, on the "Tram Line Trail". That should have been a warning but I didn't think it through. We biked through the Village of Lake Louise (nothing special) where the tram starts, then started on the trail....UP the trail...the whole way UP on a gravel, rocky trail. Dick is on his hybrid with suspension and bigger tires. I'm the idiot on my....road bike...thin tires and racing handle bars. Took us about 2+ hrs to reach Lake Louise with MUCH walking by me and MUCH waiting by Dick. He was super the whole time except for the 50th time he said "we're almost there". We sat at the iconic lake, ate our sandwiches, looked at the sky and said "let's start down NOW" as the sky looked ominous. Yes, it was ALL downhill but I still had to be careful with all the rocks and stones and stop to give my shoulder muscles a break. We got to the road just as the heavens opened up and rode the remaining 2ish miles back home...not seeing much and salt from sweat burning our eyes. We did 13 miles and I'm pretty proud to say "I'm a bad ass 71yr old, mountain biking on a road bike!" Later, when the skies cleared, we took a +50 mile ride in the truck on barely used roads, saw a couple elk, gorgeous scenery and a stunning little lake (Johnson Lake) that rivaled Lake Louise in scenery...and without all the people. It was a good day. Sorry, this got so long, especially after I told Dick he was too verbose!

    No question you are bad ass at 71 - for lots of reasons. Trip of a lifetime for sure - this 66 yr old could never do it!

Aug 7 blog 1.  In an earlier blog, I mentioned Dave and Arlo, the two friends who tried to teach me how to not be afraid of fish (as much as you can teach a 65 year old pescaphobe.) It allowed me to enjoy the deep sea charter out of Homer and salmon fishing on the Kenai River. Peach and I met Dave and Arlo, and their wives, Bonnie and Dianne, several years ago at pickleball in Whitewater. We became fast friends, getting together frequently for  pickleball, to play euchre, or to have a fish fry of Dave and Arlo's captured haul. Arlo had been battling cancer all year and defied the odds many times over as he kept playing pickleball, kept playing very good euchre, and kept enjoying his Early Times and Coke, long after his predicted survival He never complained and was always a joy and inspiration to be around. Peach and I were very much hoping to get back from Alaska in time to play another game of euchre with Arlo and everyone, to share some laughs, and to perhaps have an Alaska...

On Our Way - Stayed Tuned

INTRO - Sunday night July 2 The camp host guy's name is Dan here at Turtle River State Park near Grand Forks, North Dakota.  It's not normal to meet the camp host before you even park at your site, but that's what happened after Peach and I drove 13 hours to our first official camping spot. In truth, Dan met us. He could see we had a long day, and somehow he knew right away we had no clue how to back an 18-foot camper trailer into a tight wooded spot. Maybe it was the fact we were circling the loop looking for our site several times. Maybe it was me barely missing a large tree with the camper as I cut the corner, with Peach "gently whispering" Look out for that tree! Or maybe it was me pulling up to the camp host asking, "Where in the hell is site 63?" He told us how to get there, met us there, and quickly recognizing I was having "difficulty" backing the trailer into the site, took over so we wouldn't block the road any longer or damage ...

Day 21 July 21 It rained all night in Denali, but let up in time for Peach and I to take a nice three mile walk in the woods along and across three rushing rivers. Didn't see the mountain. In fact, Mount Denali (McKinley) is dozens of miles away from the public areas of Denali National Park, and when it's not obscured by clouds, it's blocked by other peaks in front of it that are much closer. Your best bet to see the mountain is to head 30 to 100 miles south and see it from a roadside pullout. That's what we planned to do on our way south to Anchorage. Fifteen minutes into our drive, we remembered that we forgot to take our picture at the Denali Park sign. We had done this in 2001 when we brought our kids here. Peach and I stood in front of the sign and the kids sat on top, with the mountains in the background. We brought the picture with and planned to re-enact it. So we turned around and went back the fifteen miles. Our plan was to  borrow a couple of kids who we hope...
